Torpedo Factory Indian Fusion Wedding | Alexandria, VA | Laura and Amit
The big day was finally here - Laura and Amit’s wedding day at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Old Town Alexandria! I’ve been so lucky to photograph several of their big moments, from their DOUBLE surprise proposal at the Spanish Steps in DC, to their intimate elopement at the National Portrait Gallery, and now it was time for the big celebration with all of their friends and family!
These two planned a perfect day with a fusion of their two cultures. Coming from Indian/Hindu and Midwest/Lutheran backgrounds, they planned a Christian ceremony with Hindu traditions, including a blessing from Ganesh and exchanging flower garlands. It was also really important to them for their day to be as feminist as possible, so their ceremony also included a reading from author bell hooks, and they created a new last name together!
The wedding day started off with getting ready photos in Old Town. Laura was at a beautiful Airbnb on South Royal Street with her bridesmaids, and Amit and his groomsmen got ready at Hotel Indigo.
The cobblestones on Prince Street were the perfect spot for Laura and Amit’s first look (although not the easiest surface to walk on while wearing heels 😂)
Then it was time to bring in the wedding party for some group photos!
Alexandria’s alleyways are always good places to stop for some pictures!
And then we wrapped up with some photos at Alexandria’s waterfront before heading inside the Torpedo Factory for the ceremony.
They had a beautiful ceremony and the Torpedo Factory provided such a unique setting, surrounded by artists’ studios and works of art. I also loved the string lights hanging above all of the guests!
After cocktail hour, Laura and Amit had their own modern take on an Indian baraat, entering with their wedding party and leading into their first dance!
The toasts are always one of my favorite parts of a wedding day to photograph. Part of that is due to the great candid photos of people laughing at the jokes that are told, but I also love learning more about the wedding couple from stories told by their family members and best friends. I already knew Amit and Laura were incredible people from all my time working with them, but this was just reinforced by all the kind words shared by their families in their toasts!
Then it was dance floor time! One of the highlights of the reception was the fun Bollywood dance Amit and Laura performed with their wedding party. And of course music from Prince was featured during the night - Laura’s favorite artist!
It was such a great celebration with these two and their friends and family!
